TMI? Privacy Filters Online and Off

Sharing is good, but not all good.

Being a grownup, you probably have not posted photos of you and yours drunk on your asses to Facebook. (Basic rule of thumb: Post nothing anywhere that you wouldn’t want to see on the front page of the newspaper.)

I tend to be penurious with my personal info online, but I still think 3M’s new Facebook campaign is fun. “Too Much Info” takes a poke at the kind of friend who keeps you updated every time she has a cup of coffee. The app invites you to, “Do your friend and the world a favor. Begin a TMI intervention ASAP.”

You can send your friend a virtual gift, choosing from a variety of e-cards. Does your friend have muffin-top syndrome, perhaps? Or, man melons? (They’re not all this cruel.) Fire off one of these not-so-gentle hints. When your friend clicks on it, it plays short video clips of embarrassing moments, with the tagline, “Don’t let TMI happen to you.”

The campaign is promoting 3M’s Mobile Privacy Films, which not only protect screens, but make them unreadable from most angles. They’re designed to keep what you’re doing private while your work on an airplane, in a cafe, etc.

By the way, close to one fifth of U.S. Facebook users are over 45, according to Inside Facebook. Our set remains the fastest-growing demographic segment using the site. So Facebook is a good place to reach laptop users who might be interested in keeping their work private.
