There are the impressions you pay for and those you don’t.

A recent campaign on AdNectar delivered 53 Million impressions as virtual goods that were exchanged between consumers or posted to the consumer’s own profile. Equally important were the thousands of free social impressions the brand received on Facebook’s newsfeed. In this case, we estimated that for every adoption of a the brand’s virtual good, between 10-15 free newsfeed impressions were made to friends, giving the brand an estimated 14 Million bonus impressions.
